Driving Directions From the Airport to
Hale Pohaku
Directions from the airport to Hale Pohaku depend on whether you prefer to stop to pick up supplies on your way or not. If you need anything that comes in cans, bottles, jars, or bags, you might want to stop at either Costco, KMart or Walmart on your way, as the prices on these types of items can be less than at the stores in Poipu.
If you want to stop at Costco or KMart, here are the driving directions:
As you exit the airport, you will come to a traffic light at the intersection with Highway 51 (Kapule Highway). Go left at this light. Highway 51 dead-ends at a T-junction with Rice Street; turn left. You will follow Rice Street down a hill, past our harbor (where the name changes to Nawiliwili Road), and up a long hill, past local neighborhoods, until you come to a traffic light at Pikake Street. KMart will be on your left, so make a left turn at the light, and the entrance into the KMart parking lot will be almost immediately on your right.
Drive past the entrance into KMart and you'll see Costco. Make a left turn in front of Costco, make a left onto the road in between Costco and Home Depot, and right before you reach the end, make a left into Costco's parking lot.
You can exit either Costco or KMart either through the front or the back, turning north (in the same direction you were heading as you came up the hill). There will be a traffic light at Kaumualii Highway (Highway 50), turn left.
You'll stay on Highway 50 until you see the signs for Koloa/Poipu (about 5 miles), indicating a left hand turn coming up. Follow the signs, turning left to Poipu on Maluhia Road (Highway 520). This will dead-end in Koloa Town itself; turn right, then almost immediately left, at the Chevron gas station. You're now on Poipu Road.
About 2.4 miles after the Chevron Station, you'll see Poipu Beach Park signposted on your right. Make the right turn, go to the beach, turn left on Hoone Road. Hale Pohaku is located on Pane Road, which will be the second left after you make that turn. The property will be the first houses on your left, and there is parking provided for every unit.
To get to Walmart from the airport: as you exit the airport, you'll come to the traffic light at the intersection. Go straight. There are two entrances to Walmart: one is immediately off that road (to your right). If you miss that one, go right at the NEXT traffic light (you'll be at the "T" junction with Kuhio Highway (Hwy. 56). Stay in the right hand lane, which will take you to the right hand turn in to Walmart.
If you don't want to stop at KMart or Walmart, here's the quickest way from the airport to Hale Pohaku:
Leaving the airport, go straight through the traffic light. You'll come to a "T" junction with Kuhio Highway (Highway 56); go left. Stay in the right lane until you have to merge to the left. This will put you on Kaumualii Highway (Highway 50), and just follow the directions as above.
Grocery Store Driving Directions
Between the airport and Hale Pohaku there are two major grocery stores.
First, Star Market is located in Kukui Grove Shopping Center, next to KMart. If you follow the driving directions to KMart, just continue on Pikake Street past the entrance to KMart, taking the first right (Kalepa Street). This will take you past the back side of Kukui Grove, and Star Market is located about halfway along that side of the shopping center. You'll easily see it from Kalepa Street.
In Koloa town itself there are two smaller grocery stores named Sueoka's and Big Save. From Hale Pohaku, take Poipu Road back to Koloa Town, go right at the Chevron station, then continue straight. Sueoka's will come up first, on your right, and Big Save will be at the end of the shopping area on your right, with the Koloa Post Office located on your left.
